The Lusitania medal refers to a series of commemorative medals, initially designed by German artist Karl Goetz, which the British government then mass-produced as anti-German propaganda after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. The original German medal featured an incorrect date of May 5th for the sinking, a mistake Goetz later corrected in a second edition. British officials seized on the initial error to portray the sinking as a pre-meditated act of "murder". They produced hundreds of thousands of replicas, selling them to raise funds for the British war effort and to stir anti-German sentiment
